  • Notes 
    • At the age of 18 Benjamin commenced teaching school in Illinois. After five years he was made superintendent of a school in Ripley, Iowa. He then went to Colorado to take charge of a school in Idaho Springs for two years. He was then for three years principal of a graded school in Paton, Iowa. For the next four years he was professor of sciences and mathematics at Ford Dodge College, and from there went to Wayne, Neb., where he was superintendent of the graded schools for 4 more years. He returned to DeKalb.
