  • Notes
    • Unmarried. She attended Amherst Academy and spent one year at the Mt. Holyoke Sem. After her school days and a brief trip to Washington and Philadelphia in 1854 Emily withdrew to the seclusion of her father's Amherst home. There she wrote her poetry which she refused to allow to be published. She died a virtually unknown recluse. Posthumous publication of her poems has led to the belated recognition of her great talent.
