Notes |
- In 1877 a bronze statue of "The Purtian" by the famous sculptor Saint Gaudens was presented to the city of Springfield and placed beside the public library on State Street. It was dedicated in memory of Deacon Samuel Chapin, although it is, of course, only an idealized portrait. Samuel was a member of Rev. John Eliot's First Church of Roxbury, MA and removed to Springfield by 1643, where he was a Deacon, constable, selectman and commissioner. [6]
