  • Notes
    • Benjamin founded the New York Sun, the first successful penny newspaper in the US. After serving his apprenticeship with the Springfield Republican in 1830, he went to New York, where he worked as a newspaperman and, in 1831, opened a printing office. On 3-Sep-1833, he published the first issue of the Sun. By 1835 he claimed a daily circulation of 19,360, then the highest in the world. In 1838 he sold the Sun to his brother-in-law Moses Yale Beach. In 1842, with James Wilson, he founded the monthly Brother Jonathan.
