  Joseph settled on the Ashley land owned by his father in Riverdale in West Springfield, his house being on the west side of the road. His name is on the "list of men to reenforce the Continental Army for the term of six months," "age 24 years, height 5 ft 4 in" August 4, 1780. He served under Brig. Gen John Patersen at Peekskill, Totoway and West Point, being discharged at the latter place December 15, 1780. He was also in the 2d Company of Col. Gideon Burt's Hampshire County Regiment.
