Notes |
- George had public school education to the seventh grade. Pauline
Alice Seiber stated that when George was 14 he took his mother
Vielda around drifts of snow and ice on a very difficult trip to
get to Vielda's mother, Jane Eaton Sleeper, before Jane died on
their farm at Warren Center, Bradford County, PA on 18-Feb-1911.
He and his brother worked as farm hands for Phillip Warner. About
1913 George moved to Battle Creek, Iowa to find work as there was
none at home. He found work as a farm hand, but returned to Forest
Lake, PA about 1916. He met Pauline for the first time on an
Easter Sunday in 1917 after a service at the Methodist Church.
George took Pauline's father, John, home in the horse and buggy
soon after the church service was over. Pauline remembered that we
really did not meet then but were aware of each other. A few weeks
later Pauline wrote a note to him asking him to stop by for a
visit. Sometime later, George and one of his friends did stop by
and during that visit Pauline's mother, Hattie, invited him to
attend prayer meeting with them. He did. Their first date was to
a Halloween party in Oct-1917. On 26-Feb-1918 he married Pauline
at the home of her parents, located beside the home of her grandma
Seiber, Amy R. Estus, at Forest Lake, PA. The ceremony was
performed by Thomas C. Harwood, Minister of the Gospel. The
marriage took place at 11:30 PM after everyone had gone home. It
was very quiet and private and the only ones present were her
parents, John and Hattie, and her grandmother Amy. It was very
cold and icy outside. The newlyweds stayed with Pauline's parents
for about a week before moving to the home of George's parents.
They lived with them for about a year before purchasing their farm
where they lived for many years, raising their family. The farm
was primarily a dairy farm. There was much timber on the land and
George and Pauline would cut it and sell it for additional income.
Money was very scarce and they were always worried about where the
next dollar was coming from. George liked all kinds of hunting -
deer, coon - and liked to fish. Pauline remembered that George
would go fishing late at night and often would come home very late.
They seldom went anywhere except on Christmas at which they would
visit their parents. George was a farmer and County Supervisor of
Roads. He always had a garden and spent every minute in it. He
liked to play pinochle. George died at home of "acute coronary
occ. due to cor. art. disease" at Forest Lake, PA on 11-Oct-1971.
Under significant conditions his death certificte listed "general
arteriosclerosis." His attending physician was James J. Grace,
M.D. Funeral services were at 2:00 PM Wednesday 13-Oct-1971 at the
Robert A. Bartron Funeral Home at Montrose, PA with the Rev.
Raymond T. Jones of the Forest Lake Baptist Church officiating.
Pallbearers for George were: Elmer Warner, Kenneth Small, Albert
Fraser, Arthur Potts, Horace Tiffany, and LeRoy Aldrich. Both
death certificates of George and Pauline show both their social
security numbers as 116-16-3301.
