Notes:

Marvin Dwight Day was born on the family farm, southeast of East Poplar, Saskatchewan. He spent six years on his father's farm before moving with his parents to Minneapolis, MN where he attended school. In 1925, the family moved back to Saskatchewan where Marvin continued his schooling at the Cow Creek and Poplar Creek schools near Coronach. Travel to school and back was mostly on foot, but on cold days Len Webb's dray hauled the children.

Marvin's work career was quite varied. Marvin started his first full time job in 1937 working for Kim Guy at the Imperial Oil service station in Coronach. Marvin worked at the service station until 1944 and then became manager of the Co-op until the fall of 1945. From 1945 to 1953 Marvin went to work as manager of the Red & White grocery store under the ownership of V.B. "Jerry" Fox. Jerry Fox sold the business to Butch and Kay Aussant and Marvin continued working at the store until January 1977, a span of 32 years. He then worked for John Dosch who owned the Massey Ferguson Farm Equipment until 1980. Marvin then went to work for Roy Gerde at the Brand 66 Clothing Store where he was employed at the time of his death. While being taken to the Assiniboial Hospital by ambulance on September 29, 1991 Marvin died of heart failure at the age of 76.

Marvin was very active in the community. He was a member of the Coronach Trail Ranger Troop in the early years and a member of the Town Council from 1944-48. Marvi was a member of the Elks Lodge Coronach Branch #562, the Masonic Lodge Coronach Branch #208, and the Firemen's Association. He was active on the local Fire Department for several years. Marvin was an original founding member of the Coronach Golf Club in the spring of 1958, He held the position of President or Secretary of the Golf Club since 1958 until his death. He was an excellent golfer throughout his entire life winning over 150 golfing awards in the southern Saskatchewan and northern Montana areas. Although Marv played other sports such as tennis, skating, hockey, baseball, softball and curling, golf was the sport he enjoyed the most. Marv was a member of the Board of Directors of the Coronach Credit Union for 14 years as well as a member ot the Coronach United Church, singing with the United Church choir for about 50 years. He enjoyed music and was quite talented, playing the banjo, saxophone and piano, and singing for a number of orchestras in the Coronach area.

Marvin married Emma Louise Fritz on 24 Oct 1939 in Scobey, Daniels County, MT. Emma (daughter of Peter Simon Fritz and Catherine "Kate" Louisa Klein) was born on 29 May 1916 in Shaunavon, RM #78, SK, Canada; died on 4 Jul 1978 in Gull Lake, RM #109, SK, Canada; was buried on 7 Jul 1978 in Coronach cemetery, Coronach, SK, Canada. Emma was born on the family farm six miles southeast of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Emma's mother Catherine died when Emma was six years old. After her mother died Emma was raised by her oldest sister Marie until Marie married in 1927. Emma went to a country school called Anglo located two miles southeast of their farm. Neither Emma nor her siblings went further in school than Grade Eight. After finishing their eighth grade, they all had to earn their own keep. Emma and her father could not agree on certain things so Emma went to live with her married sister Marie until such time Emma found work. Emma soon found work around Shaunavon. She first worked for her Aunt Rena and roomed with her. After Emma's older sister Clara had quit her job at the Climax Hotel, Emma replaced her at the hotel. By this time Emma's younger sister Leona, who was working in Coronach, Sask. wrote Emma saying that a Mr. Henry McLeod wanted a girl to help them take care of his four young children. As the prospect for a longer jog was inviting, Emma accepted this job and moved to Coronach in the summer of 1935 and worked about a mile from her sister Leona. Emma then found a job cooking for a road crew who were building roads around Coronach. Emma then worked for Dena (Mrs. Frank) Day in the Day nursing home. It was when she was cooking for the crew near Coronach when she met her future husband Marvin Dwight Day at a dance in 1936. They were married three years later.

On April 4th, 1950, Emma and Marvin lost their home to fire. Emma had to enter the burning building to rescue their youngest son Donald, who was hiding with the family dog under his parents bed. When carrying Donald out of the house, Emma fell and sprained her ankle, thus spending time on crutches. It is interesting to note that Coronach's new fire fighting equipment had just arrived by train and had not yet been unloaded.

Emma's first three children (Shirley, Gregory, and Donald) were born in Marvin's mother's nursing home. Emma's last child Valerie was born in the local hospital.

Emma was quite active in the Coronach community. She was a founding member of the Coronach Catholic Church, the Catholic Womens' League, and was an officer in the Coronach Order of the Royal Purple. Emma was quite talented musically and directed and sang in the Catholic Church choir for several years. Emma enjoyed golfing and curling, winning several trophies and prizes. Emma was a founding member of the Coronach Ladies Golf Club. In her early years Emma played tennis. She could also play the piano, playing "by ear". During the last five years, Emma started painting and painted several pictures which are now held by her children. Emma helped found the TOPS organization in 1972.

Emma worked at the Coronach Union Hospital for several years, first in laundry, later as a cook, and finally as a nurse's aid. She was a cook at the Coronach Hotel when she passed away in 1978. While in Gull Lake, Sask. visiting her oldest son Gregory in the summer of 1978, Emma, aged 62, died of heart failure in the Gull Lake Hospital.

Franklin Day and Dena emigrated from Kenmare, North Dakota in 1911 to their homestead near East Poplar, Saskatchewan. In 1921 they sold their farm and moved to Scobey, Montana for a short time and then to Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved back to Saskatchewan in 1925 and in 1926 moved to the site of Coronach, Sask. where they remained until they died.

Their homestead is located at 49.048513, 105.34892 OR 49degrees02'54.7"N 105degrees20'56.3"W. East of Coronach, Sask. off Highway 18, 4 KM south on Range Road 2260, across pond, turn right (west) and what is left of the foundation is 100 yards in the field.

In 1897 Dena Hugos, aged 20, found work as a "hired girl" on the William Day farm near Sacret Heart, MN, which was on the SOO line (a railroad that ran from Minneapolis to Fargo, ND) and about 60 miles southeast of Clinton, MN. William Day's "hired hand" on the farm and the one who ran it for him was Franklin James Day, his younger brother. In 1898 Franklin Day and Dena Hugos were married in Ortonville. After their marriage Dena and Frank Day returned to the William Day farm to run it for William. In April of 1899 the Clinton newspaper reported that Frank Day and family moved into town and occupied rooms upstairs in the Kaeck building.

At this time, all of the good land in Minnesota, eastern South Dakota and eastern North Dakota had been taken up in homesteads. However the northwestern part of North Dakota which was west and north of Minot, ND was not opening up to homesteaders. In January 1900 the paper reported that a party of land seekers left Clinton to join the SOO land excursions at Fairmont,going to Bowbells, ND. The party consisted of Frank Day, Chris Hugos, Vandermark, Al Burlingame and others. They returned the following week after all taken homestead claims. In April 1900 Frank Day and Art Bingham loaded their goods on the cars and set out for Kenmare, ND, where they have claims. In May 1900 Dena (Mrs. Frank) Day left to join her husband in their new home near Kenmare. Their farm was located about 12 miles NE of Kenmare, about 8 miles from the border, and probably 5 or so miles north of Norma. Kenmare at that time had a population of about 500.

Frank and Dena Day and daughters, Delia, Cora, Ella, and Lila emigrated to Saskatchewan in 1911. They homesteaded on Sec. 24 Tp. 1 Range 26 W 2nd which is southeast of East Poplar, SK. During the spring of 1922 Frank and Dena decided that farming in Canada was no longer profitable so they sold their farm and moved to Minneapolis, MN. Frank had a hard time finding a job and finally took one with the railroad shops in Eau Claure, Wisconsin. This meant that he was home only on the weekends. In early 1926 Dena and Frank Day returned to Saskatchewan and was one of the first residents of Coronach, SK, a few miles west of their old homestead. They were the second family to move into Coronach. In Coronach Frank started to build the first hotel, while Dean converted a cookshack into a cafe and opened the first cafe which fed all the construction workers. In 1930 Frank sold the hotel to a Chinese group and built a house, that soon became a nursing home. Frank Day built a livery barn and operated it and a dray service for many years until his retirement.

Frank was another of the true American/Canadian pioneers as he had homesteaded twice, once in North Dakota and again in Canada, and then at the age of 51 he helped to found a new town on the Canadian prairies.

Franklin married Dena Eline Hugos on 4 Sep 1898 in Ortonville, Big Stone County, MN. Dena (daughter of Johan (John) Kristofer Hugos and Eli Jarnsdatter Hindoien) was born on 16 Sep 1877 in Decorah, Winneshiek County, IA; died on 14 Sep 1952 in Coronach, RM #11, SK, Canada. Peter was confirmed by RC Bishop Thomas Joseph Dowling at St. John Baptist Church in Chepstow, Ont. Peter was confirmed with the name "Erasmus". Peter and Catherine "Kate" Klein were married by Roman Catholic Priest F.A. Zettler in Chepstow, Ontario on January 23, 1906. Witnesses to their wedding were Henricus Fritz of Mt. Carmel, ND and Magdalena Klein of Chepstow, ON. Peter and Kate then moved to Wales, North Dakota, where Peter did carpenter work.

John moved in 1907 near Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, where he filed on a homestead five and a half miles southeast of Shaunavon, known 4 years later as Anglo School District #516. One of the signators of a Declaration to organize this School District was signed by Peter S. Fritz.

In 1909 Kate moved from North Dakota with children Andrew and Marie. They came by train via Moose Jaw to Gull Lake. Peter had shipped a carload of machinery, household furniture, three horses, one cow and some chickens. Our farm was 38 miles from Gull Lake, Sask. Until the railroad came in 1913, everything had to be hauled from Gull Lake, a 3-day trip. Peter built a two room house where they lived in until 1917, then moved into a two story house which Peter had built. He also built a big hip-roofed barn made of sod. He had his blacksmith forge in a front stall. They had no drinking water and Peter had to haul it from a spring about three times a week. Peter would hitch his horse "Bill" to a stone boat, which had two barrels, with wash tubs for lids. Kate (41 years old) passed away on December 2, 1922. Marie, age 13, looked after the family of 8 for six years until she married. In 1924 the barn burned and Peter built another. Peter passed away in March 1941, and son Andrew took over the farm in 1934 until December 1971 when he sold it to his son Philip and daughter-in-law Sheila.

Daughters Rita, Emma and Leona Fritz attended Anglo School in 1929 (photos of their class of 1929 can be found in the book Quarter Stake Echoes.

Dwight Henry Day was born in 1829 in Rome, New York. Rome is located about 30 miles east of Syracuse, NY or about 200 miles straight south of Ottawa, Ontario. Rome has a population of about 55,000 located in Oneida County.
In the 1850 census Dwight Day was living with his father Alfred Day and a Miss Dopp, aged 70 years, on a farm near Rome, NY.
In 1869 Dwight H. Day was reported to be a farmer living on lot 1 in Rome, NY and leasing 45 acres of land.
In the 1870 census Dwight Day was reported to be farming in Oneida County near Rome, NY. Real estated owned was valued at $3,500 and the value of Dwight's personal estated was reported to be $900. Dwight's family at this time consisted of his wife Betsey (aged 30, occupation: keeping house), Anna (13), Nellie (10), Emma (8), Abram (5), William (3), and Elijah (1). Baby Elijah appears to be George E. Day.
In the June 1880 census Dwight Day was reported to be a laborer living in Oneida County, (first Ward|), Rome, NY. At this time Dwight's family consisted of his wife Betsy (aged 40), and their children William (aged 13), George (12, at school) and Franklin (4). It was reported that Dwight "cannot write" and that Betsy "cannot read or write".

Dwight Henry Day and family left New York in 1884 and settled at Big Stone and in Hammond (Zumbro Township), Minnesota, where they lived on a farm until Dwight's death in 1913. Dwight died at his home in South Troy Sunday evening at 8:15 after an illness lasting more than two months. Dwight was a successful fruit grower and a splendid gardener. He supplied fruit and vegetables to many homes in Zumbro Falls. Dwight was held in high regard by all his neighbors and friends. The funeral services were held in the school house with Rev. Carkuff officiating.

Dwight married Betsey Ann Anderson in 1856 in Rome, Oneida County, NY. Betsey (daughter of Levi Anderson and Harriet Carpenter) was born on 18 Sep 1838 in Rome, Oneida County, NY; died on 2 Dec 1938 in Granite Falls, Yellow Medicine County, MN; was buried in Dale Pleasant Prairie cemetery, Zumbro Falls, Wabasha County, MN. A newspaper article published in November 1938 (Tribune), commenting on Betsy's upcoming 100th birthday is partly reproduced as follows: "Mrs. Betsy Day to be 100 on November 16. Mrs. Betsy Day lives with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Nolton. Mrs. Day was born in Rome, NY of Yankee parents. Her life has always been associated with farming. After marrying Dwight Henry Day, a young farmer of Rome, NY, they came west with the family. In 1884 they travelled by train to Hammond, Minnesota where Mr. Day bought a farm of 80 acres. Accompanying them were their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nolton and their family. After the death of Mr. Day, Mrs. Day spent her time with her children and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted at the South Troy church with Rev. L.R. Fletcher and Rev. C. Van Zee officiating with internment in the Pleasant Prairie cemetery.

Johan married Eli Jarnsdatter Hindoien on 5 Apr 1869 in Singsas, Sor-Trondelag, Norway. Eli (daughter of Jarn Halvorsen Hindoien and Kari Absalonsdatter Singsasmo) was born on 15 May 1851 in Singsas, Midtre Gauldal kommune, Sør-Trøndelag fylke, Norway; died on 23 Mar 1905 in Clark, Clark County, SD; was buried in Saint Paul Lutheran Memorial cemetery, Clinton, Big Stone County, MN.
