- He began his Civil War service as the Sergeant Major of the 71st New York Militia Regiment, being mustered in on April 26, 1861. Serving through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, he was honorably mustered out on July 28, 1861. When the 96th New York Volunteer Infantry was forming the next year, he received a commission as a Captain to command its Company H on March 27, 1862, and let the unit until September 23, 1862. On that date he was transferred to the 131st New York Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted Major. By August of the next year he had risen to Colonel and commander of the regiment, being promoted to that position on August 22, 1862 (to rank from January 15, 1863. He led his men through battles in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia, and was honorably mustered out on July 25, 1865 at Savannah, Georgia. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for \"gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Opequan, Va.\" After the war he became a successful pharmaceuticals merchant, and served as the Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1911.
